Front label Bottle shot Back label
JD aroma-tasting - 3 red wines (1 Apr 2026)

Overview

This 2023 Cuvée Tradition exemplifies the classic Saumur-Champigny style, delivering a pure, unadulterated expression of Cabernet Franc from its tuffeau limestone terroir. The wine balances immediate drinkability with genuine complexity, offering a textbook demonstration of the variety's capacity for both red fruit generosity and herbal sophistication. With its vibrant acidity and fine tannins, this is a wine that will evolve gracefully over the next 3-5 years, though its youthful charm is undeniable. A masterclass in Loire Valley restraint and terroir transparency.

Appearance

Brilliant
Medium
Deep ruby core with vibrant purple reflections, narrow watery rim
Moderate viscosity with slow-forming tears indicating medium glycerol content

The brilliant clarity and vivid purple-ruby hue immediately signal youth and precision, characteristic of a cool-climate Cabernet Franc from the tuffeau terroir. The medium intensity suggests neither excessive extraction nor dilution, promising structural balance. The narrow rim indicates minimal oxidation and fresh primary fruit.

Nose

The bouquet bursts forth with an exhilarating perfume of freshly crushed red berries and wildflowers, immediately evocative of a summer hedgerow in full bloom. Swirling reveals the variety's signature herbal sophistication—distinctive notes of crushed green vegetation and blackcurrant bud that speak to its Cabernet Franc parentage. Beneath this primary exuberance lies a subtle mineral tension, a chalky whisper of the tuffeau limestone that anchors these vines. There's an almost electric freshness here, a purity of fruit untainted by oak, allowing the grape's transparent terroir expression to shine through with remarkable clarity and focus.

Terroir

The Clos des Cordeliers sits on the Champigny plateau on the left bank of the Loire River, characterized by steep slopes with southern and southeastern exposures that maximize sun exposure. The vineyard benefits from the proximity to the Loire which moderates temperatures, while the tuffeau limestone bedrock provides excellent drainage and imparts a distinctive mineral signature. This specific terroir within Saumur-Champigny is renowned for producing Cabernet Franc with elegance, finesse, and a characteristic graphite-like tension, balancing ripe fruit with cool-climate freshness.

Geology

Tuffeau limestone (Turonian chalk), Clay-limestone, Sandy-clay topsoils, Flint (silex) deposits
Turonian stage of the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 90 million years old

The porous tuffeau acts as a natural water regulator, storing moisture during dry periods and draining excess water during wet spells, which stresses vines appropriately to concentrate flavors. This chalky bedrock contributes high calcium content and a distinct saline minerality to the wine, while the clay components provide structure and body to the mid-palate.

Climate

Temperate oceanic with strong continental influences
Moderate length with budbreak typically in April, flowering in June, and harvest occurring from mid-September to early October; the 2023 vintage experienced a wet spring followed by a hot, dry summer requiring careful canopy management

Diurnal Range: Significant temperature variation, particularly during the ripening season (September-October), with daytime temperatures reaching 22-25°C and dropping to 8-12°C at night

Vinification

Traditional Burgundian-influenced Loire Valley red wine vinification with temperature-controlled fermentation

Destemmed grapes undergo 10-15 days of maceration in stainless steel or concrete vats at 25-28°C with gentle pump-overs and punch-downs to extract color and tannins without excessive bitterness; the 'Tradition' cuvée typically ages 6-9 months in neutral vessels (tank or used oak) to preserve primary fruit purity and terroir expression rather than oak influence

Minimal intervention approach focused on expressing the unique mineral character of the tuffeau terroir, with an emphasis on elegance, drinkability, and authentic varietal expression of Cabernet Franc

Winery History

Founded: 1958 (estate established), though the Clos itself dates to the 13th century

The Ratron family has stewarded the historic Clos des Cordeliers, a walled vineyard originally cultivated by Franciscan monks (Cordeliers) in the Middle Ages, since the mid-20th century. The estate represents one of the most prestigious terroirs in Saumur-Champigny, with the family maintaining traditional methods while gradually modernizing the cellar to preserve the site's legacy.

Winemaker: Current generation of the Ratron family (specific winemaker name not widely documented in international sources)

Respect for the historic clos and its unique tuffeau terroir, combining sustainable viticulture with traditional winemaking to produce authentic expressions of Cabernet Franc that reflect the elegance of the Champigny plateau
