This 2022 Château les Valentines Rouge exemplifies the modern Côtes de Provence style, blending Syrah's structure and spice with Grenache's generous red fruits and Mourvèdre's earthy depth. The wine captures the warmth of the vintage while maintaining admirable freshness, presenting a harmonious balance between ripe fruit and savoury garrigue complexity. It offers immediate drinking pleasure with sufficient tannic backbone to evolve gracefully over the next 3-5 years, pairing beautifully with grilled lamb, ratatouille, or aged chèvre.
The crystal-clear brilliance and saturated ruby hue immediately signal a healthy, well-made wine from a warm vintage. The purple rim variation confirms the wine's primary youth, while the moderate tear formation hints at balanced extract without excessive heaviness, typical of the Côtes de Provence terroir.
The bouquet bursts forth with exuberant primary fruit, immediately evoking a sun-drenched Provençal hillside in late summer. A cascade of wild berries dominates—freshly crushed raspberries and blackberries interwoven with the delicate floral lift of violet petals and rosehip. Beneath this fruity opulence lies the unmistakable signature of the garrigue: wild thyme and white pepper adding savoury complexity, while subtle vanilla and toast whisper of careful oak integration. The overall impression is one of joyful immediacy and authentic Mediterranean character, clean and expressive without any hint of reduction or fault.

Château les Valentines is situated in the La Londe-les-Maures area of Côtes de Provence, nestled on the slopes of the Massif des Maures just 3 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. The vineyards are planted on steep, terraced hillsides composed of schist and quartz, providing excellent drainage and forcing vines to develop deep root systems. This proximity to the coast creates a unique microclimate where cooling sea breezes (the "vent marin") moderate the intense Provençal sunshine, preserving acidity while allowing optimal phenolic ripeness. The combination of poor, rocky soils and maritime influence produces wines with distinct mineral salinity, concentrated fruit, and surprising freshness for the region.
The schist bedrock provides excellent drainage and contributes a distinctive saline minerality and flinty character to the wine. Quartz veins reflect sunlight and store heat, aiding ripening of late-ripening varieties like Mourvèdre. These poor, acidic soils naturally limit yields, resulting in small, concentrated berries with thick skins that provide color, tannin structure, and aging potential.
Diurnal Range: Significant variation with daytime temperatures frequently exceeding 30°C (86°F) during summer, dropping to 15-18°C (59-64°F) at night due to sea breezes and thermal inertia of the nearby Mediterranean
Traditional red winemaking with temperature-controlled fermentation and gentle extraction
Hand-harvested grapes are carefully sorted and typically destemmed (with possible partial whole-cluster for Grenache to add spice), then fermented in concrete or stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures (25-28°C). The wine undergoes 15-20 days of maceration with gentle pump-overs and punch-downs to extract color and tannins without harshness. Aging occurs primarily in concrete tanks or neutral French oak barrels for 12-18 months to preserve fruit purity while adding textural complexity.
Low-intervention organic winemaking that respects the integrity of the fruit and the unique schist terroir; avoiding excessive extraction and new oak to maintain elegance, freshness, and authentic expression of the La Londe site despite the challenges of a warm climate
Founded: 1997
Gilles Pons and Pascale Massenot acquired this historic estate, named after the Chapel of Saint Valentine located on the property, and immediately converted the 50-hectare vineyard to organic farming. They have dedicated themselves to revealing the unique schist terroir of La Londe, elevating the estate from a bulk wine producer to one of the most respected addresses in Provence through meticulous vineyard work and non-interventionist winemaking.
